New study available
A new STOA study (Science and Technology Options Assessment) has been recently published. The final report on “Integrated Urban e-Ticketing for Public Transport and Touristic Sites” was carried out by the Institute for Technology Assessment and Systems Analysis (ITAS), Karslruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) as member of the European Technology Assessment Group (ETAG).
As the official description indicates:
“This report deals with the development of integrated e-ticketing systems for public transport and touristic sites in cities. While technologies are already available and ready to meet multi-function requirements, e-ticketing has not yet been implemented on a wider scale in Europe. The implementation of an integrated e-ticketing system is a complex process that requires the synchronised activity of heterogeneous actors. Public transport operators and authorities, financial service providers, telecommunications operators, and the tourism sector need to work together to combine their products on a single card. Besides technological characteristics, legal and economic aspects play a decisive role. Stakeholders that are involved in the implementation of an integrated ticketing system need to agree on technical specifications as well as on institutional and governance issues.”

DG for Internal Policies Policy Department A has recently published a new study on “Mapping Smart Cities in the EU”.
In the official summary it can be read:
“This report was commissioned to provide background information and advice on Smart Cities in the European Union (EU) and to explain how existing mechanisms perform. In exploring this, a working definition of a Smart City is established and the cities fitting this definition across the Member States are mapped. An analysis of the objectives and Europe 2020 targets of Smart City initiatives finds that despite their early stage of development, Smart City objectives should be more explicit, well defined and clearly aligned to city development, innovation plans and Europe 2020 in order to be successful. “
